Willian speaks out on penalty disagreement with Ross Barkley against Valencia

Trouble in paradise?

Chelsea’s Willian has spoken out over his penalty disagreement with Ross Barkley, after the midfielder missed a crucial spot-kick against Valencia.

The Blues took on Valencia in the Champions League on Tuesday, and were looking down the barrel of a 1-0 defeat.

However, there was a chance of late salvation for Frank Lampard’s Chelsea.

Valencia’s Daniel Wass handled the ball in the area and, after a review by VAR, a penalty was given.

Despite Jorginho usually taking Chelsea’s penalties, Ross Barkley stood over the ball and was confronted by Willian, who also wanted to take the spot-kick.

After some clear tension, Barkley took the penalty and missed, leading to many questions being asked after the game.

Now, Willian has spoken out over the disagreement that he had with Barkley.

“I wanted to take it…”

Despite Barkley being the designated penalty taker, as confirmed by Frank Lampard, Willian claimed that he wanted to take the spot-kick.

However, Barkley ‘was confident to take it’, and Willian reaffirmed that Chelsea win together and lose together.

“I wanted to take it but he (Barkley) was confident to take it,” Willian revealed, as quoted by the Telegraph.

“This is football. He missed the penalty but it could be me that missed, or Jorginho or whoever. So football is like this. But when we win, we win together, and when we lose, we lose together.”

Barkley has his say on penalty disagreement

Ross Barkley has also responded to the drama surrounding the incident.

The Englishman has claimed that teammates Willian and Jorginho were encouraging him to score.

“All players feel confident of taking penalties, but we can all miss them,” he explained, again quoted by the Telegraph.

“It’s more ‘good luck with the penalty’ type of thing, encouraging me. They would have been willing to take it as well, but I felt confident.

“They were just encouraging me, encouraging me to score the goal. They are confident of taking penalties as well, but I take penalties every day. I don’t miss them in training and in pre-season I was scoring penalties. I’ve missed penalties before, when I was at Everton. I’m gutted I missed, but these things happen.”
