Willian has reportedly turned down Chelsea’s latest contract offer/Arsenal frontrunners for Brazilian’s signature

Willian

A fresh update regarding Willian’s contract situation has emerged online on Monday.

Willian’s contract situation

Willian has stood as a key figure for Chelsea over the last seven years, but his long-term future at Stamford Bridge has been unclear for some time now.

The Brazilian’s previous contract actually expired on June 30th, but due to Covid-19, he was allowed to sign a short-term deal, to play out the remainder of the Blues’ season.

However, whilst both sides were able to agree on a short extension, maintaining the winger’s services for next season looks increasingly unlikely for Chelsea.

Frank Lampard did state in July that he was hopeful that the 31-year-old would stay put.

But, as has been well documented, the main stumbling block when it comes to negotiations has been the fact that Chelsea are only willing to offer the 31-year-old a two-year deal.

Willian, though, wants three.

A compromise of some form did appear to have been reached when it was reported last week that Willian could sign a new contract ‘in the coming days’.

Willian turns down new deal

However, no announcement was subsequently forthcoming, with Willian’s agent, Kia Joorabchian, having then claimed that his client will make a decision on his future once the campaign is finished, which, for Chelsea, looks likely to be on August 8th (unless they somehow pull off a huge upset to overturn their three-goal deficit vs Bayern Munich).

Frank Lampard then weighed in once again after Chelsea’s FA Cup final defeat on Saturday, stating that whilst he knows the club’s situation, he remains unsure what the eventual decision will be:

“It is his decision, I haven’t got that answer. I know the situation at the club’s end. I have a great relationship with Willian, but I don’t actually know what the decision is.”

And now, as mentioned above, a fresh update regarding Willian’s contract has emerged on Monday, August 3rd.

According to Goal, Willian has once again turned down a two-year deal offered to him by the Londoners.

However, it is added that the Chelsea star is yet to make a final decision on his future.

The report from Goal also suggests that Arsenal are the frontrunners for Willian’s signature.

The Times, meanwhile, claimed on Monday that Mikel Arteta is keen to add Willian to his side’s ranks.
