Tried and failed
Willian is a player Jose Mourinho has made no secret about admiring during his managerial career, and the winger was one of the few players who tried under Mourinho in his final months at Chelsea.
That being said Antonio Conte has taken some time to warm to Willian, and after the player spent a fair bit of time on the bench last season, the links between United and Willian returned – and according to the player himself, there was serious interest from United.
The Daily Mail report Willian said: “He likes me a lot and I like him a lot as a coach and as a person. He has put his trust in me and in my work, and I was very grateful to him.
“Manchester came to me, they talked with my agent, but nothing happened, because Chelsea would not negotiate me in any way and I’m very happy at Chelsea.
“Everyone has their way of working. Mourinho is a coach who likes more the ball practice, works the ball possession and makes short games.
“Conte likes to work the tactical and the physical part. Every coach has his way of working. Mourinho is a fantastic coach and won everything wherever he went.
“Conte is a fantastic coach too, because he won everything at Juventus and has already won the Premier League in his first year with Chelsea. Each one has his merits.”
One player who has of course made the cross from Chelsea to Manchester United is Nemanja Matic, who has looked the real deal since signing for Mourinho again.
Matic has struggled at times over the last couple of years, and there have certainly been those who have doubted the player, yet it seems the majority of United fans are thrilled with the purchase, and while Chelsea fans were happy to take the money on offer for the midfielder, they may well come to regret it – with Antonio Conte making it clear how unhappy he is with the sale.
