Will Premier League football stop if there is a second national lockdown? / French example provides hope for English fans

The model works

Information regarding the impending UK lockdown was leaked on Friday evening, an issue with the Government is now reportedly investigating. However, the breaking news sparked questions as to which employment sectors would remain open.

The leaked information suggested that the lockdown would differ from the initial shutdown which began in March. Schools, colleges and universities are expected to remain open however no mention has been made regarding elite sports.

Premier League executive Richard Masters said that the ‘Project Restart’ was a ‘proven model that works’ and therefore if, or rather when, the nation locks down, the Premier League would continue.

“We’re in constant dialogue with government about all aspects of the co-operation we have with them,” said Masters. “We don’t feel the closed doors model is at risk at the moment.”

There were rumours of a possible ‘circuit breaker’ lockdown coming into effect and the suggestion was put to Masters had that been the case. “No, as I said, not that we don’t scenario plan and talk about various different outcomes – you have to in the current environment – there’s no talk about the Premier League or sport being suspended at the moment.”

Plans as to how the lower leagues would be affected remain unclear. EFL teams have also been playing games behind closed doors under much stricter financial implications.

The French example

English football fans will be encouraged by the way France’s football has continued despite the country entering another lockdown. The top three tiers were confirmed to be remaining ongoing throughout the new restrictions.

Roxana Maracineanu, France’s Minister for Sport, said on Wednesday, “The coming weeks will be tough economically but also on a human level. This is why I wanted to confirm to you this evening that the continuity of the sport that is practiced as a profession is assured.”

“Top athletes and professional athletes will be able to continue to train. And they will also be able to continue to compete since travel for professional reasons is authorised.”

However, cup competitions like the Coupe de France have been suspended. With the inclusion of teams below the top three tiers involved, it would not have been possible with the restrictions.

The combination of these sources of information would seem to suggest that elite sports will continue in their current form.
