Why Xherdan Shaqiri missed Liverpool vs Bournemouth

Liverpool vs Bournemouth

Liverpool played host to Bournemouth on Saturday as they looked to go top of the Premier League.

Manchester City knocked Liverpool off top spot during the week with a 1-0 win over Everton.

However, Liverpool do still have a game in hand on City who play Chelsea on Sunday.

Liverpool’s form has not been great recently, drawing 1-1 vs out of form West Ham and Leicester.

So, hosting Bournemouth, who had the worst defence of the top 16 Premier League teams before this weekend, was a great opportunity to get back to winning ways.

Bournemouth had won just two of their last five league games but could have moved up to 8th with a win over Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Why Xherdan Shaqiri did not feature

Heading into the Bournemouth game, there was one noticeable absence from Liverpool’s matchday squad.

Xherdan Shaqiri has been not been a regular starter for Liverpool this season.

But the winger is an excellent super sub who has scored six and assisted two in the league for Liverpool this campaign.

However, Shaqiri would be left out of Liverpool’s squad to face Bournemouth.

It has since been revealed that Shaqiri missed out due to a slight abdominal strain.

Despite Shaqiri’s absence, Liverpool got off to a flying start as Sadio Mane put them 1-0 up in the 24th.

Georginio Wijnaldum added Liverpool’s second shortly after before Mo Salah made it 3-0 early in the second half.
