Why West Ham’s Declan Rice won’t be available for England’s World Cup qualifiers

Why West Ham’s Declan Rice won’t be available for England’s World Cup qualifiers

England need four points from six

Gareth Southgate and England head into the international break knowing that they need four points from six in order to guarantee their qualification for the World Cup in Qatar next year.

The Three Lions are due to host Albania at Wembley, before travelling to San Marino to round off their campaign.

As such, despite strong performances from the likes of Conor Gallagher and Emile Smith Rowe for their clubs, it was a strong and largely expected squad which Southgate selected. While the Manchester United duo of Jadon Sancho and Jesse Lingard missed out, the out-of-form trio of Harry Kane, Harry Maguire and Raheem Sterling all made the cut.

Additionally, Jude Bellingham returned to the squad, while Conor Coady and Tyrone Mings held onto their spots from Euro 2020, despite the latter having been dropped by Aston Villa for poor performances.

If the panel of players gets the job done, and lands England on the plane to Qatar in 12 months, however, there can be no complaints.

Rice out of England World Cup qualifiers

One in-form man who will not be taking part over the coming week is West Ham standout Declan Rice. Rice has starred in his club’s surprisingly strong start to the season, with the Hammers finding themselves in third place in the Premier League, just three points off top spot holders Chelsea.

However, it seems as though illness will keep him out of action.

In a statement, the FA revealed:

Having been unable to train due to illness since reporting to St. George’s Park, the midfielder has returned to West Ham United and will play no part in the forthcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

No additions to the squad are planned at this moment in time.

Mason Mount and Luke Shaw are still yet to link up with the group and continue to be assessed following dental surgery and concussion respectively.

As it stands, therefore, only Jordan Henderson, Kalvin Phillips, Mason Mount (a doubt for the first game) and Jude Bellingham are the traditional central midfield options available to Gareth Southgate for the crucial fixtures.

Will it be enough?
