Why Toby Alderweireld & Serge Aurier were not in Tottenham’s squad to face Newcastle

Why Toby Alderweireld & Serge Aurier were not in Tottenham’s squad to face Newcastle

Spurs held by Newcastle

Tottenham faced off with Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon.

Spurs headed into the clash aware that a victory would see them climb above Chelsea – who lost to West Brom on Saturday – into the Premier League’s Champions League places.

However, despite having been in decent form domestically prior to the international break, things did not go to plan for Spurs today.

Joelinton handed Newcastle the advantage at St. James’ Park 28 minutes in.

A quick-fire brace from Harry Kane less than 10 minutes later then saw Spurs take the lead heading into the break.

However, a late strike from Arsenal’s Joe Willock, currently on loan at Newcastle, forced the visitors to settle for a share of the spoils on Sunday.

Why Alderweireld and Aurier missed out vs Newcastle

Barring Harry Kane, Spurs were pretty poor all round against the Magpies, especially defensively.

Sergio Reguilon, Davinson Sanchez, Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga made up a fairly young backline on Sunday, which, for the most part, looked all over the place.

As a result, Tottenham’s fans were no doubt wondering where both Toby Alderwireld and Serge Aurier were, after both were omitted from the club’s matchday squad.

Jose Mourinho, speaking post-match, though, has since provided an explanation for the absence of the pair, confirming that both only rejoined training on Saturday, having not received Covid-19 tests in time to return to the fray earlier:

“They were fit, yeah. But they report for training only yesterday and they went for their national teams and they didn’t make the Covid tests on time to be in the training session on Thursday, not even on Friday, they come only yesterday. But did we lose matches with them or with them we were a perfect team defensively?”
