Toby Alderweireld

Why Roma reportedly think they can sign Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld for just €12m

Tottenham & Toby Alderweireld

Tottenham fans have been aware of the danger of losing Toby Alderweireld for a while.

Alderweireld has been on Tottenham’s books since his move from Atletico Madrid in 2015.

But could the Belgian defender leave Spurs this summer?

Suitors are being encouraged to make their move for Alderweireld, as it’s common knowledge that the Belgian has a £25m release clause until July 26th, 2019.

Roma hope to sign Alderweireld for €12m

Serie A side Roma have been linked with a possible swoop for Alderweireld in recent days.

On Thursday, Gazzetta dello Sport tell their readers that Roma hope to sign Alderweireld at an even larger discount price: €12m.

Roma believe that they can pay under half of Alderweireld’s current release clause, because the defender only has a year to run on his Spurs contract, while the Belgian turns 31 in 2020.

It’s worth noting that Italian transfer guru Gianluca Di Marzio has also reported that Roma hope to sign Alderweireld for less than his 25 million euro release clause.

In addition, GdS also think that Alderweireld may lower his wage demands if he joins Roma.

Alderweireld currently nets 4 million euros a season with Spurs, reports Gazzetta. Yet the pink paper say that Roma are willing to offer the Belgian a three-year deal to lower that figure.
