Why Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is unhappy & staggering sum Man United have spent under Norwegian revealed

A report from England claims that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is unhappy because Manchester United did not sign a midfielder over the summer.

Man United need a defensive midfielder

Man United would have a solid 2021 summer window which saw all of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo arrive at Old Trafford.

But despite a pretty successful window, there is still one glaring problem area which the Manchester giants need to address, which comes, of course, in defensive midfield.

There are a couple of reasons for this, with the main one to give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer licence to actually play Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba in the same midfield three, without being too exposed defensively.

Pogba is a quality midfielder, but when played in a pivot alongside Fred or Scott McTominay, it is safe to say that United look vulnerable.

And even when the ‘McFred’ pivot is deployed, it is still clear that Man United lack quality in that area.

Why Solskjaer is unhappy & the money Man United spent under him

Though not all the blame for United’s poor run can be put on United not signing a midfielder over the summer, it has become clear that the Red Devils’ bad form this term has been impacted by this.

Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic were the latest duo to be deployed by Solskjaer in a midfield pivot vs Leicester City over the weekend.

And it is safe to say that this pairing did not work well at all. Man United lost the tie 4-2 and Pogba, in particular, looked disinterested.

Now, following his side’s latest subpar showing, the Manchester Evening News are reporting that Solskjaer is privately unhappy Manchester United failed to sign a midfielder in the transfer window.

Solskjaer’s gripe is somewhat reasonable, but he cannot pin all of the blame on United not signing a midfielder, especially when you realise that, as per the MEN, United have invested £461.3m in transfer fees on 14 players during Solskjaer’s stint in the dugout.

Given that it is such a high sum, it is surprising, defensive midfielder or not, that Man United have not won a single trophy nor mounted an actual title challenge.
