Why mood among many of Chelsea’s attackers isn’t good

Why mood among many of Chelsea’s attackers isn’t good

One of the main issues facing Chelsea this season has been their inability to form a dominant front-three.

At first glance, Chelsea’s 48 goals from 24 Premier League games – the 3rd-highest in the division behind Liverpool and Manchester City – suggests that there isn’t really that much of a goal-scoring issue at Chelsea.

However, a 7-0 win over Norwich does help paper over the cracks somewhat. In the Premier League, meanwhile, Jorginho (7) and Mason Mount (6), are the Londoners’ current top scorers this term.

This all comes despite the fact Chelsea have a wealth of attacking options at their disposal. Romelu Lukaku was scoring for fun at Inter Milan last year and is a proven Premier League goalscorer for three other clubs. Timo Werner was one of the Bundesliga’s top scorers in his last season at RB Leipzig and Kai Havertz was a serious prospect before he signed for Chelsea.

So what has gone wrong? Well, whilst all the blame cannot be put on Tuchel as Werner was struggling before he arrived, The Athletic have now provided a potential reason for Chelsea’s attack not quite clicking under their current boss.

It is reported that the mood among many of Chelsea’s attackers isn’t good. Part of the reason for this is due to the way Tuchel uses and treats them.

Chelsea attackers to consider leaving

Another point of tension has been the way Tuchel talks to his attackers. One source describes the former PSG man’s manner as ‘brutal’, with players regularly subjected to a barrage of criticism for every wrong decision and missed chance.

In turn, this is said to have led to Chelsea’s attackers second-guessing themselves, not playing on instinct and being afraid to try things and risk giving the ball away.

Perhaps most concerningly of all though, The Athletic claim that the situation has grown serious enough for some of Chelsea’s attackers to start considering leaving in the summer.
