Why Mateo Kovacic ‘earned the wrath’ of Thomas Tuchel during Chelsea’s draw with Wolves

Why Mateo Kovacic ‘earned the wrath’ of Thomas Tuchel during Chelsea’s draw with Wolves

An explanation for why Thomas Tuchel got angry with Mateo Kovacic during Chelsea’s clash with Wolves has been provided.

Wolves vs Chelsea

Chelsea would take on Bruno Lage’s Wolves on Sunday afternoon in a Premier League tie.

Thomas Tuchel’s men headed into the game without some key men due to injuries and Covid-19.

The Blues, though, still boasted a strong enough side to likely see off most teams in the Premier League.

However, the first-half, on the day, proved one to forget for Chelsea. The Londoners created very little, allowing Wolves to dominate the tie and generate a number of chances.

Daniel Podence even had the ball in the back of Edouard Mendy’s net, before seeing his strike ruled out for offside.

Chelsea would then grow into the tie during the second half but were unable to find that opening goal.

As a result, Thomas Tuchel’s side were forced to settle for a share of the spoils, which has moved them further away from current league leaders Manchester City.

After winning just one of their last four league games, Chelsea are now a full six points adrift of Pep Guardiola and co., whilst they remain three points behind Liverpool in second.

Kovacic earns wrath of Tuchel

During the tie, one of Chelsea’s problem areas was midfield, with an unfit N’Golo Kante and an out-of-position Trevoh Chalobah starting there.

Mateo Kovacic then came on after 65 minutes on the day, but he too was not at full fitness and, as reported below by, would earn the wrath of Tuchel during the tie after not playing a pass quick enough to Marcos Alonso:

Kovacic was a bit rusty, which is to be expected, but still only he knows why he attempted a scoop pass across the edge of his own box that went straight to a gold shirt rather than to Cesar Azpilicueta. He also earned the wrath of Tuchel on the touchline after not playing a pass quick enough to Marcos Alonso which saw the head coach jump up and down and no doubt shout something loud, muffled by his snood in the baltic conditions.
