Why Manchester City will field a youth team against Swindon in the FA Cup

FA Cup third round weekend

This weekend marks one of the biggest on the English sporting calendar, as the Premier League clubs enter the FA Cup at the third round stage, alongside teams from across the football pyramid.

Manchester City have been drawn against Swindon Town, who are currently fighting for promotion out of League Two, and have beaten Crewe Alexandra and Walsall to get to this stage.

And while there will be no replays, the minnows will at least be welcoming the English champions to the County Ground on Friday evening.

COVID strikes the champions

Swindon could even be fancying their chances of an upset, as it has been revealed that 7 of Manchester City’s first-team members have tested positive for COVID-19, while Pep Guardiola will also not be on the sidelines after returning a positive test of his own.

This means that, while the game will still go ahead, the Citizens will be without much of their influential first-team, and those that tested negative may no longer get the night off as City try to balance youth with experience.

It also offers Swindon Town a glimmer of hope regarding an upset.
