What’s happening with Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld?
There are just three more days for clubs to try to sign Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham at a discount rate.
As has been well-publicised for months, Alderweireld has a £25m release clause in his Spurs contract which expires on July 26th, 2019.
Alderweireld, 30, is under contract with Spurs until next summer.
Manchester United & Alderweireld
On Tuesday in the Times, reporter Paul Hirst has looked into Alderweireld’s contract situation.
Cutting to the chase, it’s believed that Alderweireld will now remain at Tottenham for 2019-20.
The Times confirm that Spurs are yet to receive a bid for their Belgian, despite his well-known release clause.
Paul Hirst has also examined why Man United aren’t making any moves to try to sign Alderweireld:
Jose Mourinho wanted to sign Alderweireld for Manchester United last summer but Ed Woodward, the executive vice-chairman, and the scouting department vetoed that.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Mourinho’s successor, wants to bring in younger signings and has targeted Harry Maguire, the 26-year-old Leicester City defender.
What Alderweireld said about his Spurs future
Following Tottenham’s 3-2 win over Juventus, Alderweireld made the following comments in the mixed zone:
I’ve always said, I’m focused on Spurs and trying to deliver the job that I need to do.
The manager knows that I’m committed to the team and to the club.
“There’s no air to breathe!” – @AlderweireldTob is not fond of Singapore’s humidity but he believes in Mauricio Pochettino’s work at @SpursOfficial and has NO plans to leave the club this summer despite speculation linking him to other clubs. #COYS #ICCSG pic.twitter.com/pd0BOEDFms

Will Harry Maguire leave Leicester City?
In an eye-catching statement, the Times also claim that there’s a financial chasm between Man United and Leicester when it comes to valuing Maguire:
United are yet to agree on a deal with Leicester, who want £90 million, which is £30 million more than United’s valuation of the player.

Harry Maguire to Manchester United remains ongoing. From what I’ve heard I’d be surprised if it did not happen before the end of the window. Very surprised.

A deal may well happen – the player is open to a move to Manchester – but the latest speculation/guesswork over the past 24 hours I’m told is inaccurate.

Harry Maguire isn’t even an upgrade on Chris Smalling.
