An explanation for the surprise absence of Kieran Tierney from Arsenal’s matchday squad to face Aston Villa has been provided on Friday evening.

Mikel Arteta’s men are of course set to return to action shortly.

The Gunners, boasting a 6-game unbeaten streak across all competitions, will play host to the aforementioned Aston Villa in north London, in the opening fixture of the Premier League weekend.

Arsenal head into proceedings eyeing a much-needed return to winning ways, having followed up a 4-game stretch of flawless results with a pair of stalemates either side of the international break.

The most recent came this past Monday, when Arteta and co. were forced to battle back from a goal down to snatch a last-gasp point at home to Crystal Palace.

As outlined above, however, ahead of kick-off at the Emirates in under an hour’s time, Arsenal’s hopes have been dealt something of a blow.

This comes in the form of an altogether concerning absence on the personnel front.

The player set to play no part versus Villa? Kieran Tierney.

Upon the unveiling of the hosts’ starting XI a short time ago, first-choice left-back Tierney was nowhere to be seen, with summer arrival Nuno Tavares instead afforded a first-ever Premier League start:

In turn, attentions quickly shifted towards Tierney’s whereabouts, with the Scottish international not even afforded a place on the Arsenal bench.

The Gunners themselves, though, have since provided an explanation for as much, with Tierney forced to sit out the action due to a ‘bruised left ankle’:
