Why Jorginho apologised to Tuchel during Chelsea’s win over Tottenham
Chelsea faced off with London rivals Tottenham at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
The tie was not as interesting at the infamous Battle of the Bridge, but it still provided 90 minutes’ worth of entertainment.
Chelsea came out on top on the day by two goals to nil, handing themselves some much-needed breathing space in the top-four race.
Despite a fairly comfortable win, though, Jorginho would still move to apologise to Thomas Tuchel during the game.
As reported by football.london, Chelsea set up with a new system vs Tottenham – a 4-1-4-1 or 4-3-3 with a six and an eight depending on how you look at it.
However, there were a few teething problems with Chelsea’s possession game in the new system. And after Jorginho failed to slip through a pass to Romelu Lukaku, Tuchel got the Italian’s attention before telling him to calm down, to remain patient.
In response, Jorginho raised a hand in apology before he and his teammates then went about the remainder of the first 45 in a far more controlled manner.
Has Tuchel found Chelsea’s new system?
With their two best wing-backs still sidelined, Tuchel needed to change things up to end his side’s slump in form and the system deployed vs Spurs looks to have done the job.
The 3-4-3 normally sees Chelsea’s wing-backs provide the width and much of the creativity. However, this 4-1-4-1, much like Manchester City’s, relies heavily on the left and right-wingers to provide that width, which Callum Hudson-Odoi and Hakim Ziyech did well on the day.
Tuchel, meanwhile, had this to say on his new system: “We tried a 4-1-4-1 today because we tried a 4-4-2 against them in the first match and that gave us an advantage but then they reacted to it in the second match.
“We thought maybe this approach could be an approach to give the players a solution after the last matches and we had the players for the formation, players in shape, players who wanted and should be on the pitch, and good positions for them.
“It gives us more options than only playing a 3-4-3 and we don’t decide now[whether to stick with 4-1-4-1 going forward], but it was well done.”
