Why Jack Grealish is missing for Aston Villa vs Fulham

Why Jack Grealish is missing for Aston Villa vs Fulham

Aston Villa vs Fulham

Aston Villa and Fulham are set to go head-to-head at Villa Park on Sunday afternoon.

Both outfits, despite there being just eight game weeks of the season remaining, still have something to play for.

Fulham are of course firmly entrenched in a relegation battle. Newcastle’s failure to beat Tottenham earlier on Sunday, though, means that Scott Parker’s side can overtake the Magpies, and climb out of the bottom-three, with a win over Villa.

As for Dean Smith’s side, they are still in with a shot of securing European football for next season.

The Claret and Blue currently sit 11th in the Premier League. However, they have two games in hand on most of the sides around them. Winning both, meanwhile, would see Villa climb to within two points of 6th.

Dean Smith provides Grealish update

A win against Fulham is therefore imperative, if the Villans hope to stay in the Europa League race.

It must be noted, however, that the form shown by Dean Smith’s men has been pretty poor since they lost Jack Grealish to injury.

Speaking on Friday, the Villa boss, though, suggested that Grealish was primed to return return vs Fulham, after training throughout the week:

In turn, it came as a blow when, upon the hosts’ XI being announced an hour prior to kick-off on Sunday, Grealish was nowhere to be seen:

But Smith has since provided an explanation for his star man’s absence, confirming that the midfielder suffered a bit of a setback on Saturday:

“He’s trained this week and was looking good, but had some discomfort yesterday (Saturday), so pulled out after 10 minutes in training, so we’re on the side of caution as we must do with these injuries.”

When drawn on how long Grealish could now be ruled out for, Smith was keen to keep his cards close to his chest:

“I don’t know, I’m not going to stick a timeline on it because you’ll always get egg on your face with a timeline, so we’ll see how he goes.”
