Why Everton pair Allan & Iwobi missed out vs Crystal Palace

Why Everton pair Allan & Iwobi missed out vs Crystal Palace

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti has provided an explanation for the respective absences of Allan and Alex Iwobi from the club’s matchday squad to face Crystal Palace.

Merseyside showdown

The Toffees are of course currently locked in action with Roy Hodgson’s men at Goodison Park.

The clash marks both sides’ first on the back of the international break, with hosts Everton eyeing a return to form, as the Blues continue to push for a European berth.

Defeats in their last two Premier League outings left Ancelotti and co. in a lowly 8th in the English top-flight table ahead of kick-off this evening.

The inconsistencies of the rest of the top-6 chasing pack, though, mean that wins in their two games in hand could see Everton climb above all of Liverpool, Tottenham, West Ham and Chelsea into the Champions League spots.

‘A little problem…’

As such, the hosts will be desperate for all 3 points this evening, up against an altogether inconsistent Palace outfit at Goodison Park.

It therefore no doubt came as a blow when, upon the club’s starting XI being unveiled an hour prior to kick-off, two of Everton’s key performers were nowhere to be seen.

The players in question? Allan and Alex Iwobi:

In turn, speaking during a pre-match interview, Carlo Ancelotti was inevitably drawn on the respective absences of the pair, which the Italian put down to ‘little’ fitness problems.

The returning Jean-Philippe Gbamin, on the other hand, could well be introduced off the bench for his first taste of competitive football since 2019:
