Why Divock Origi is not in Liverpool’s squad to face Leeds

A straightforward explanation for the absence of Divock Origi from Liverpool’s matchday squad to face Leeds United has, on Sunday evening, been forthcoming.

Peacocks clash

Jurgen Klopp’s men are of course currently locked in Premier League action.

Ahead of a highly-anticipated return to European endeavours versus AC Milan in midweek, the Reds first made the trip to Yorkshire, for a showdown with Leeds.

Liverpool no doubt headed into proceedings with confidence high in the club’s camp, on the back of a solid opening to the new campaign.

Successive victories over Norwich City and Burnley were followed by a 1-1 stalemate with European champions Chelsea last time out, which the Merseysiders, in truth, probably should have come away from victorious.

Such form, in turn, means that a return to winning ways this evening would see Klopp and co. join Chelsea and Manchester United on ten points atop the English top-flight table.

Inside the opening quarter of an hour at Elland Road, though, the scoreline remains locked at 0-0.

‘A big indictment’

Ahead of kick-off on Sunday, personnel news unsurprisingly took centre stage in the pre-match chatter.

This came with both sides having of course been sweating over the participation of key performers, owing to FIFA’s 5-day rule, which, at one point, looked set to rule the likes of Alisson, Fabinho and Raphinha out of proceedings.

In the end, though, the Brazilian trio were permitted to take to the pitch at Elland Road, culminating in the following starting XI opted for by Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp:

Klopp’s matchday squad, however, nevertheless turned heads prior to the action getting underway.

This came with the German, despite the injury absence of key attacker Roberto Firmino, having opted against calling up the struggling Divock Origi.

In turn, questions quickly spread regarding the whereabouts of the Belgian.

And, as outlined above, an explanation for Origi’s latest omission has since been forthcoming, with Paul Gorst of the Liverpool Echo having confirmed that the former Lille man has fallen so far out of favour at Liverpool that he was simply ‘not fancied’ for the Reds’ latest outing:
