Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has provided an explanation for his decision to start Marcos Alonso over Ben Chilwell in this evening’s FA Cup finale.
The Blues and Foxes are of course currently locked in action in the marquee fixture of the weekend.
After ousting Manchester City and Southampton in their respective semi-final outings, the top-4 pair made the trip to the capital on Saturday, to vie it out for English football’s most historic cup prize.
Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea, for obvious reasons, headed into proceedings as favourites, amid a fine spell of form which included a dominant ousting of Real Madrid from the Champions League.
The Pensioners, though, did fall to a rare defeat during the week, when struggling Arsenal departed Stamford Bridge with all three points, courtesy of a 1-0 victory.
Leicester, on the other hand, bagged an important win of their own on Tuesday, in putting Manchester United to the sword by two goals to one.
‘A bit more height’
As such, Thomas Tuchel was no doubt fully aware that a tough task awaited his side this evening, in getting the better of an always game Foxes outfit.
The Chelsea boss, in turn, opted to shake up his starting XI somewhat, reintroducing the likes of Antonio Rudiger, Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner.
Perhaps most notable of all, though, was the inclusion of Marcos Alonso, over Ben Chilwell:

It therefore came as little surprise when Tuchel was drawn on his left-back call during a pre-match interview at Wembley.
And the German went on to cite superior ‘height and experience’ on Alonso’s part as key, explaining:
