Why Chelsea are set to wear a commemorative kit against Malmo

Chelsea lift the Champions League

Thomas Tuchel completed an impressive turnaround last May, as he led Chelsea to Champions League success, the second in their history.

Taking over from Frank Lampard in January 2021, the former Paris Saint-Germain boss found the club in ninth place in the Premier League, but led them to 4th come the end of the season, before beating Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City 1-0 in the Champions League final courtesy of a Kai Havertz goal.

The Blues are now aiming to repeat a rare feat of retaining the illustrious European trophy. They have thus far taken three points from their opening two group games, beating Zenit St Petersburg 1-0 before losing to Italian giants Juventus by the same scoreline in Turin.

Now, they will take on Swedish champions Malmo at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening, before travelling to Sweden to complete the double header which would, should they win both, put Chelsea in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stages.

Chelsea to debut commemorative shirt

On the back of their European success last season, the Premier League side will debut a new shirt on Wednesday, which commemorates their latest competition win.

As per Matt Davies-Adams of the Athletic, only 420 have been made, which were available to buy on the club’s official store.

Prices for the shirt begin at an eye-watering £195, the equivalent of three regular jerseys. But what makes it so special?

Well, as per Chelsea themselves, “key moments” from their 1-0 win over Manchester City have been “weaved into the design”, including Kai Havertz’s celebratory knee slide.
