Why Callum Wilson’s goal vs Liverpool will still be disallowed next season despite handball rule change

Why Callum Wilson’s goal vs Liverpool will still be disallowed next season despite handball rule change

Liverpool held by Newcastle

Saturday’s early Premier League kick-off played out a short time ago.

The tie saw Liverpool play host to Newcastle United, with the former aiming to move into the Champions League places.

And the Reds got things off to a positive start, when Mohamed Salah netted his 20th league goal of the campaign to put the home side 1-0 up early on:

Liverpool went on to create countless further chances throughout the opening 45, and should have added at least one more goal.

However, Jurgen Klopp’s side were wasteful, and were eventually punished when, in second-half injury-time, Joe Willock came off the bench yet again to secure a huge point for the Magpies:

Why Wilson’s goal will be disallowed next season

Right before Willock’s goal, though, Newcastle thought that they had already equalised via Callum Wilson.

However, after Wilson’s initial shot deflected back off Alisson and onto the attacker’s arm – which was right down by his side – VAR ruled the goal out for handball.

Following the game, there was talk that the same goal would actually be awarded next season, when the new handball rule comes in.

However, as has since been explained, Wilson’s finish, in fact, would continue to be ruled out.

The reason for this is that, if the ball hits the arm of the goal scorer, even accidentally, it will result in his finish being disallowed.

The incoming change will only affect the situation if the ball hits the arm of a player who does not put the ball in the net. As such, if the ball had deflected off Wilson’s arm for a teammate to score, it would stand next season.
