What Leicester’s Youri Tielemans said about replacing Wijnaldum at Liverpool

What Leicester’s Youri Tielemans said about replacing Wijnaldum at Liverpool

Youri Tielemans has recently responded to speculation he could be a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum at Liverpool

Tielemans’ Leicester stint

After he impressed on loan during the second half of the 2018/19 campaign, Leicester signed Tielemans permanently in the summer of 2019.

The Foxes are believed to have paid French outfit AS Monaco around £40m to bring the midfielder to the King Power.

The Belgian has since established himself as a key cog in Brendan Rodgers’ side, notching 108 appearances in all competitions, across which he has scored 17 and assisted 19.

It was the 2020/21 campaign, though, which saw Tielemans produce arguably his best football in a Leicester shirt.

Despite largely operating in a deep midfield role, the former Anderlecht talent had managed to chip in with nine goals and six assists, including scoring the winning goal for Leicester in the FA Cup final vs Chelsea last month:

Tielemans quizzed on Liverpool rumours

On the back of his super 2020/21, Tielemans found himself linked with Liverpool.

The Reds have lost Georginio Wijnaldum after the midfielder joined PSG on a free transfer due to his contract with Liverpool expiring.

So, given Wijnaldum’s importance to Jurgen Klopp’s side, signing a replacement for the Dutchman does seem like a key priority.

Borussia Monchengladbach star Florian Neuhaus has been tipped for a move to Anfield recently.

However, reports from Belgium last month claimed that Tielemans was one of the players on Liverpool’s list as a potential Wijnaldum replacement.

Now, the Leicester standout has been asked about the Liverpool rumours and whether he could fill Wijnaldum’s boots, to which he responded:

“That’s really none of my business right now. Let the journalists speak. They undoubtedly have a lot to do with that.

“But I don’t care about that. All I can do is make sure that I am as good as possible on the pitch.”
