What Jurgen Klopp said about Thiago Alcantara after Liverpool beat Aston Villa

Liverpool didn’t sign Timo Werner for financial reasons, said Jurgen Klopp

Will Liverpool sign Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich this summer?

When Chelsea signed Timo Werner following months of rumours linking the German attacker with a switch to Anfield, the main reason given for Liverpool’s decision to back out the transfer was financial.

Some argued that Liverpool’s front three – Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah – may have prevented Werner from playing at Anfield.

But Jurgen Klopp revealed the reason why Liverpool have backed out of signing Werner centred on financial constraints brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic. Klopp said:

It’s rather quiet here (at Liverpool) at the moment, I think it’s safe to say.

If you want to take it seriously and run a normal business and depend on income and have no idea how much you will earn… especially because we don’t know when we can start playing with spectators again.

Discussing with the players about things like salary waivers and on the other hand buying a player for £50-60m, we have to explain.

Since Klopp made those comments Liverpool have gone on to wrap up the title.

But has that significantly altered Liverpool’s financial position so that they can afford to now sign Thiago?

What Jurgen Klopp said about Thiago Alcantara

On Sunday, following Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Anfield, Jurgen Klopp addressed the rumours linking Thiago with a switch to Merseyside this summer. Klopp said:

Would you be surprised if I don’t give an answer on that, just because I never answer these kind of questions.

Thiago Alcantara is a really good player. Like a lot of other players out there, I like (him) a lot.

But that’s all I have to say about that.

Of course, Klopp could have easily dodged talking about Thiago altogether, but he didn’t.

So is this a sign that there’s some truth in the Thiago-Liverpool transfer story?

What has Klopp previously said about Thiago

While Klopp limited his comments on Thiago on Sunday, previously the German manager has lavished praise on the Spanish playmaker.

Back in February 2019, Bayern held Liverpool to a goalless draw at Anfield in the Champions League.

After that game, Klopp singled out Thiago for praise. He said:

Thiago is a world-class footballer. He played that deep-lying playmaker role very well. Alongside (Javi) Martinez, they were very good.

Moreover, in 2017, when asked to name his favourite Spanish footballers, Klopp said:

In my time in Germany, I admired Thiago Alcantara, for example.

Liverpool 2 – Aston Villa 0

Are Liverpool going to become the first team in Premier League history to win all their home games in a season?

Liverpool kept up their 100% record at Anfield on Sunday with a 2-0 win against Aston Villa.

Villa impressed in the first-half as Liverpool failed to break the deadlock.

However, Villa’s resilience broke down in the 71st minute when  Sadio Mane finally got Liverpool in front.

Days after agreeing a new deal with Liverpool, Curtis Jones came off the bench to score the killer second.
