‘We’ve said enough about VAR’: Solskjaer on Romeu’s ‘nasty’ Greenwood challenge & Williams injury

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has this evening provided his take on Oriol Romeu’s dangerous tackle on Mason Greenwood during the first-half of his side’s disappointing draw with Southampton.

Obafemi strikes late

The Red Devils returned to action a short time ago, in a meeting with Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men at Old Trafford.

United of course headed into the matchup as English football’s form team, having won 5 straight, and remained unbeaten since late in January.

This run, coupled with the defeats suffered by both Chelsea and Leicester over the weekend, meant that a win for the Manchester powerhouse this evening would have seen them jump to 3rd in the Premier League table.

When the 90 minutes were said and done, however, United’s Champions League ambitions were dealt a blow.

After Stuart Armstrong put Southampton in front with just 12 minutes on the clock, a quickfire double from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial soon saw the hosts turn things around.

Just when it looked as though the Red Devils had the 3 points sewn up, though, a late, late Michael Obafemi finish at the back post saw Southampton secure a share of the spoils.

‘A nasty one’

On the back of his side’s demoralising stalemate, meanwhile, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was drawn on a number of the game’s flashpoints during his post-match interview.

The main talking point surrounded a first-half challenge from Saints midfielder Oriol Romeu, on Mason Greenwood.

After the latter had released the ball inside his own half, Romeu aimed a dangerous studs-first lunge onto the inside of Greenwood’s ankle.

Bafflingly, a VAR check saw it decided that the challenge was not worthy of a card, with Romeu having only been replaced by goalscorer Obafemi in the 87th-minute.

Solskjaer, for his part, was unsurprisingly also left unimpressed by both the tackle itself and the handling of the situation, with the United boss having explained:

‘I know my ankle wouldn’t take that challenge as a nice one. It was a nasty one.’

‘We have said enough about VAR.’

Solskjaer was also drawn on Brandon Williams’ wellbeing, after the young left-back was forced off with a nasty-looking head injury late on, leaving United to see out the clash with 10 men:

‘He’s got a cut above his eye. I’ve not been to see him yet. He’s with the medical staff.’
