Declan Rice

West Ham edge a little bit closer to safety.

Last midweek, they won for just the second time in 2020, beating Chelsea 3-2 at home thanks to Andriy Yarmolenko’s 89th minute winner.

They were hoping to build on that at St James’ Park and looked set to do so after just four minutes.

Jarrod Bowen’s cross found Michail Antonio who slotted home the opener.

However, shortly after, Newcastle equalised after some slack West Ham defending.

The second half provided a sense of déjà vu.

Mid-way through the second half, another scorer against Chelsea Tomáš Souček fired in his second goal for the club.

The Czech Republic international pouncing on a loose ball after Declan Rice’s header rebounded off the bar.

However, just 92 seconds later, even worse Hammers defending saw Shelvey get Newcastle back on level terms for a second time.

2-2 it finished; this is the first time West Ham have gone two consecutive league games without losing since September, a run of 26 matches.

This is their longest such run in the 21st century.

However, it leaves them 16th, three points above Watford and four above Aston Villa and Bournemouth.

The Irons still have to play three of the sides below them before the end of the season; Norwich, Watford and on the final day Villa at home.

Their destiny is very much in their own hands so can they put daylight between themselves and danger with a win here?

Burnley back in Europe?

Chris Wood

Burnley meanwhile are looking up the table and, potentially, a return to European competition.

On Saturday, they welcomed Sheffield United to Turf Moor and took the lead late in the first half through James Tarkowski.

However, they could not hold on with the Blades equalising late on to leave Lancashire with a 1-1 draw.

Nevertheless, Sean Dyche’s team have still only lost one of their last 11 Premier League games and that was at Manchester City.

This form, dating back to 19 January, has seen them rise from 15th all the way up to ninth.

At the moment, with eighth good enough for European qualification, they’re just two points below being back in the Europa League for the second time in three seasons.

After this, they face Liverpool and Wolves before finishing the season against Norwich and then Brighton.

A win here and Europa League football could be returning to Turf Moor.

David Moyes named the same XI for both of the last two games and, even if he’d like to do the same again, he might have to make some changes due to the quick turnaround.

Łukasz Fabiański, who’s been absent for long spells of this season, has been key for them whenever he plays and will continue to do so.

In defence, Angelo Ogbonna will continue alongside Issa Diop ahead of Fabián Balbuena.

Now that both Jeremy Ngakia and Pablo Zabaleta have left the club, Ryan Fredericks is the only available right-back.

On the other side, Aaron Cresswell will keep his place ahead of Arthur Masuaku.

In midfield Tomáš Souček, on loan from Slavia Praha, has become an integral part of this team, scoring in both of their last two games.

He’ll continue alongside Declan Rice with fit again Mark Noble likely to displace Pablo Fornals.

On the wings is where Moyes has options.

Manuel Lanzini and Jarrod Bowen are expected to keep their places.

However, Felipe Anderson, Albian Ajeti, Xande Silva and last Wednesday’s match winner Andriy Yarmolenko are alternatives.

Robert Snodgrass is injured.

Only one man will lead the line though.

Michail Antonio has now scored 30 Premier League goals, all of which have been scored inside the box.

He also comes into this one having scored in back to back top-flight games for the first time since April 2019.

Sébastien Haller has not been involved in a matchday squad since football’s return.

Burnley team news vs West Ham United

BURNLEY, ENGLAND – DECEMBER 28: Ashley Barnes of Burnley gestures during the Premier League match between Burnley FC and Manchester United at Turf Moor on December 28, 2019 in Burnley, United Kingdom. (Photo by Simon Stacpoole/Offside/Offside via Getty Images)

Despite a long injury list providing Sean Dyche with limited options, Burnley continue to be Burnley.

Nick Pope will continue in goal.

He’s a key reason behind the fact that only Liverpool have kept more than Burnley’s 13 Premier League clean sheets this season.

This is their highest number in a top-flight campaign since keeping 16 in 1954/55.

Sunday’s goal scorer James Tarkowski is another mainstay at the back.

His finish against Sheffield United was Burnley’s first first half goal since early March against Tottenham.

In fact, in their last 21 league games, they’ve only scored four first half goals.

Alongside him Ben Mee, who missed the weekend’s fixture, is a doubt so Kevin Long could continue.

Charlie Taylor and Phil Bardsley will continue at full-back.

Erik Pieters, a left-back himself, has been playing in midfield of late but could drop out.

This would allow Dwight McNeil to switch to his favoured left flank.

In the middle, Jack Cork is out so Ashley Westwood’s partner will be Josh Brownhill again.

Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson could come in on the right.

Robbie Brady is the other available option; Jeff Hendrick and Aaron Lennon have left the club.

Up front, Ashley Barnes is still not fully fit but, having come off the bench at the weekend, Chris Wood could return to the XI.

He’ll partner Jay Rodriguez with Matěj Vydra back amongst a very youthful, inexperienced set of substitutes.
