West Ham & Villarreal’s Pablo Fornals
According to Spanish daily Marca on Tuesday, West Ham look set to sign Villarreal’s Pablo Fornals for €27 million.
2018-19 was a rough year for Villarreal in La Liga. The Yellow Submarine finished the season in 14th spot in the 20-team league.
Villarreal only picked up 44 points from 38 games.
As a result, report Marca, Villarreal are now looking to cut costs. Readers are told:
One of the first players to leave is going to be Pablo Fornals. The Castellon playmaker is heading to the Premier League.
Marca also added that West Ham tried to sign Fornals back in January without success.
Who is Pablo Fornals?
Pablo Fornals is a 23-year-old Spanish attacking midfielder.
Rather than playing out wide, Fornals was often deployed in a central role for Villarreal in 2018-19.
He’s currently under contract with Villarreal until 2022, having joined from Malaga back in 2017.
Last season, in 35 matches in La Liga, Fornals scored two goals and chipped in with three assists.
Fornals also scored three goals in 12 Europa League matches.
Does Pablo Fornals to West Ham make sense?
West Ham have several creative attacking midfielders on their books.
Last summer, the Hammers splashed out big money to sign Felipe Anderson from Lazio.
At the same time, Manuel Lanzini returned to action in the final months of the season following an ACL injury.
However, there have been recent suggestions that Lanzini could soon leave West Ham.
Is that why Fornals is a reported West Ham target?
Argentine Lanzini only has one year to run on his current West Ham contract, while there’s confusion regarding whether West Ham can extend that deal for another 24-months:
Football.London understands that Lanzini is challenging the legality of the two-year option inserted into his contract and the wages it is offering, believed to be £70,000 a week but that was before the wage bill in east London ballooned with expensive new arrivals.
It is being said that the option was not mutually agreed and the Hammers fear they could lose any legal case.
Lanzini has also been linked with a possible move to River Plate by TyC Sports.
