West Ham 3 – Southampton 0
What a weekend for West Ham United!
Sufferers for so much of the season, Hammers fans would have been forgiven for ‘bricking it’ before kick off against Southampton.
Facing a relegation six-pointer against a chief rival, West Ham’s last match ended in a 3-0 defeat to Burnley, sprinkled with grim scenes of pitch invasions and fans chanting at the board.
But West Ham fans shouldn’t have worried. Southampton were appalling in the first half at the London Stadium, and the Irons took full advantage.
Inter Milan loanee Joao Mario opened the scoring, before Marko Arnautovic bagged a brace.
The win lifted West Ham to 14th, with 33 points from 31 games. The Hammers are five points clear of Southampton and the bottom three.
West Ham’s option to sign Inter Milan’s Joao Mario
Joao Mario joined West Ham in January on loan until the end of the season.
After the Southampton game, the Times have looked into Joao Mario’s record at West Ham since signing.
Moreover, they’ve also wondered about West Ham’s option to sign the midfielder:
West Ham’s main mid-season acquisition, Joao Mario, on the other hand, has had an effect – he was excellent in his first game, against Crystal Palace, and picked up an assist against Brighton, but this was by far his most influential performance.
There have been conflicting reports as to whether Mario’s loan from Inter Milan includes the option of a permanent transfer; if it does, he would prove an asset.
Do West Ham fans feel confident their owners will sign Joao Mario this summer?
