West Ham boss Moyes slams Chris Kavanagh over Balbuena dismissal: ‘Somebody who’s never played the game’

West Ham boss Moyes slams Chris Kavanagh over Balbuena dismissal: ‘Somebody who’s never played the game’

West Ham United manager David Moyes did not hold back this evening, when drawn on referee Chris Kavanagh’s decision to dismiss Fabian Balbuena versus Chelsea.

Werner makes the difference

The Hammers were of course back in action earlier on Saturday.

Moyes and co. welcomed capital rivals Chelsea to the London Stadium, for a crunch showdown in the Premier League’s top-4 race.

Ahead of kick-off, the two sides were separated only by goal difference, in 4th and 5th respectively.

When all was said and done this evening, though, it was Chelsea who bagged an all-important winner, to take control of the Champions League picture, with five games to play.

The solitary goal of the derby came late in the first-half, when Ben Chilwell’s inch-perfect delivery from the left was slotted home from close range by Timo Werner:

‘Rubbish decision’

In the aftermath of the capital showdown, however, it was not the eventual result which grabbed the headlines.

Instead, this came in the form of the latest controversial decision stemming from a VAR check.

Ten minutes from time, Fabian Balbuena and Ben Chilwell were involved in a challenge which left the latter grounded.

Upon replays being broadcast, it became clear that this had come as a result of a follow through on Balbuena’s part, but one which, from all angles, looked completely accidental.

Nevertheless, following a brief check of the pitchside monitor, referee Chris Kavanagh came to the conclusion that the West Ham stopper had purposely connected with Chilwell’s calf, resulting in a red card being produced:

In turn, speaking during a post-match interview with Sky Sports, it came as little surprise when David Moyes was drawn on the incident.

And the West Ham boss did not at all hold back with his response, suggesting that Chris Kavanagh has ‘never played the game’, resulting in a ‘rubbish’ decision:

‘I think it’s a decision made by somebody who’s never played the game. I don’t know where Fabi Balbuena is supposed to plant his foot.’

‘If they do think that, you’ll look at the one a few minutes later, with Coufal and Rudiger, a similar challenge, but they never did anything about it.’

‘I don’t know how it’s a red card. I don’t know where he’s supposed to plant his foot. I don’t think for one minute there’s a bit of malice in that. I thought it was a rubbish decision.’
