West Bromwich Albion vs Aston Villa betting tips: Championship play-offs semi-final second leg preview and predictions

West Brom vs Aston Villa prediction: West Brom 1-1 Aston Villa

After a frantic, fierce first leg at Villa Park, this tie is finely poised ahead of this second leg at the Hawthorns.

Early on in the first leg, Villa goalkeeper Jed Steer made an outstanding save to deny Jay Rodriguez.

However, just moments later, a slip from Glenn Whelan allowed Dwight Gayle to pounce and open the scoring for the Albion.

1-0 at half time.

The score remained unchanged going into the final 15 before an eventful 3 minutes at the Holte End.

Conor Hourihane, from the edge of the box, smashed in an equaliser with 15 minutes remaining.

Then, just a matter of moments later, Kieran Gibbs got caught out and brought down Jack Grealish.

Penalty to Villa.

Tammy Abraham cooly slotted home from the spot as the home side turned the game right on it’s head.

It finished 2-1 but there was still one more huge moment before the end.

West Brom’s top scorer Dwight Gayle was sent off in the 88th minute for dangerously sliding into Jed Steer.

He’ll be a huge miss for this game.

Can West Brom turn this tie around or will Villa make it back to back play-off finals?

West Bromwich Albion vs Aston Villa: Match preview

It’s been a very strange season for the Baggies and it looks like it could end in disappointment.

Darren Moore was sacked as Head Coach on March 9 despite the fact they were fourth in the table.

James Shan remains in caretaker charge but they did not move up or down from fourth place under his stewardship.

In the regular season, he won 6 of his 10 games in charge losing just 3 times.

Nevertheless, he’s unlikely to be at the helm next season if he does not deliver promotion.

With some key players missing, can West Brom turn this one around?

Can Aston Villa secure a return to Wembley?

As for Aston Villa, they’re looking to get back to the play-off final after losing 1-0 to Fulham at Wembley 12 months ago.

They’ve also had a change of manager during the course of this season.

Steve Bruce was sacked in October with Dean Smith taking over and what an impact he’s made.

They were 15th when he was appointed but 17 wins, 11 draws and just 7 defeats later, they made the play-offs.

That included a club record breaking 11 wins in a row between March 2 and April 22.

Villa are also the Championship’s comeback kings as they proved on Saturday.

During the regular season, they won 29 points from losing positions, 5 more than the next most.

They fought back 17 out of a possible 26 times and, without those points, they would have finished just five points above the drop zone.

Even if they are under the cosh here, they’ve proven they have the grit and determination required in the Championship.

Will it be the visiting fans celebrating at the Hawthorns?

West Brom are without some key personnel ahead of this massive tie.

Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone will be up against the side he was playing for last season.

He has kept 5 clean sheets in 7 play-off appearances, the only goal he’d conceded before Saturday was Tom Cairney’s final winner for Fulham against Villa last season.

Ahead of him will be a back 3.

Craig Dawson limped off at the weekend and is unlikely to be fit.

So, Mason Holgate will move to centre-back with Tyrone Mears coming in at right wing-back.

In midfield, Jake Livermore is suspended.

Without him, their midfield will be Chris Brunt and Stefan Johansen.

Up front they have limited options.

After Saturday, including play-offs, Dwight Gayle has now scored 24 league goals this season, his highest ever tally in a single campaign in the Football League, surpassing the 23 he scored for Newcastle in 2016-17.

However, after his goal he was then sent off so is suspended.

A major blow

That meant he became the first West Bromwich Albion player to both score and be sent off in the same match since Hal Robson-Kanu against Burnley in the Premier League in August 2017.

Speaking of Robson-Kanu he’s also suspended.

That’s because he was sent off in the 93rd minute in their final league game at Derby.

Jay Rodriguez is the only forward available to James Shaw so he’ll be tasked with adding to his 22 goals this season.

Can this depleted side make Wembley?

As for Villa, their players appear to have come through Saturday’s match unscathed.

They’re expected to name an unchanged line-up from Saturday.

In goal Jed Steer will start after showing his qualities at the weekend.

He is keeping Croatia’s number 1 Lovre Kalinić on the bench right now.

In defence Tyrone Mings’ importance to Villa cannot be underestimated.

Aston Villa concede a goal every 118 minutes with him on the pitch this season, compared to a goal every 57 minutes without him.

In midfield, Dean Smith has a big decision to make.

Glenn Whelan, as the more defensive option, started on Saturday.

However, Villa massively improved when goalscorer Conor Hourihane came on and he’s expected to keep his place.

Up front will be their man man.

Tammy Abraham’s penalty on Saturday was his 20th Championship goal of the season at Villa Park.

Making him the first player to score 20+ home goals in a single season in the competition (including play-offs) since Glenn Murray for Crystal Palace in 2012-13 (24).

That was his 26th goal anywhere for Villa so can he add to that here?

Interestingly, only 3 of the starting line-up also started last season’s play-off final.

Will this XI lead Villa back to the final?
