“We are not here to give ten games in a row to a player if he does not perform” former Arsenal boss Unai Emery slams Real Madrid loanee Take Kubo

“We are not here to give ten games in a row to a player if he does not perform” former Arsenal boss Unai Emery slams Real Madrid loanee Take Kubo

Back to Emery’s best

Unai Emery left Arsenal having failed to aid in the transition of the club from previous manager Arsene Wenger. Eventually, after a string of poor results in which it was clear to see that the players had lost faith in the manager’s direction, the club decided to part ways with the Spaniard.

Emery has taken charge of Spanish side Villarreal and is having an excellent season in La Liga. The club sit in 4th place, just six points behind league leaders Atletico Madrid and are currently on a 19 game unbeaten run.

Old problems arise

One of the supposed problems that Emery faced whilst at Arsenal was dealing with some of the bigger personalities at the club such as Mesut Ozil. This was an issue which the Spaniard also faced when manager of PSG with Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

This appears to be something which has perpetuated at his new club. However, whilst Ozil and Neymar are examples of huge personalities and figures in club dressing rooms, a recent interview with Emery showed that the Spaniard is struggling with Real Madrid loan signing Takefusa Kubo.

Much is expected of the young Japanese international and he had a stellar season on loan with Mallorca last year. The 19-year old has been primarily used as a substitute under Emery and questions from the media had asked why he had been given so little first-team action this season.

Emery was blunt in his response and described Kubo as a player which offered his side very little and therefore could not promise him further game time.

“We are not here to give a player ten games in a row if he doesn’t perform.” said Emery. “He is given a match and he must earn more. It is valid for the youth players and for everyone. There is a requirement here and that is to win. “

Could Emery be described as being too harsh publicly to the youngster? Very likely. Ultimately, these young players need to be protected and that is not the case with Emery’s recent words.

With January fast approaching and Real Madrid likely keen to ensure that Kubo gets the best loan experience possible, Los Blancos may choose to recall the Japanese international and find a more suitable club for him to play at.
