Slovenia v England

Three days after beating Malta at Wembley, the Three Lions face Slovenia tonight in their World Cup qualifier.

It’s 2 wins from 2 for England, but Slovenia will provide a much sterner test than Malta did on Saturday.

Wayne Rooney dropped – as expected

The big team news is that captain and record goalscorer Wayne Rooney has been dropped to the bench – although this isn’t really news, as Gareth Southgate confirmed as much yesterday.

Rooney has found himself under enormous pressure to hang on to his place for both club and country of late, and interim manager Southgate has now decided to drop the captain, with Eric Dier coming into midfield in his place.

Arsenal man Theo Walcott also starts.

He didn’t exactly set the world alight against Malta on Saturday, but Southgate has justifiably kept faith in Walcott, as he has plenty of credit in the bank after such a brilliant start to the season with his club.

Otherwise, there’s a second consecutive start for Jesse Lingard – he seems to be a big favourite of Southgate’s.

England XI: Hart, Walker, Stones, Cahill, Rose, Dier, Henderson, Walcott, Alli, Lingard, Sturridge
