Wayne Rooney: Derby deal set up so 50% of wages fall outside FFP calculations

Wayne Rooney & Derby County

Last season,Derby County had Frank Lampard on their bench.

This season, Dutch legend Phillip Cocu is already in the dugout.

Widespread reports, meanwhile are expecting Wayne Rooney to soon be announced as Derby’s newest player-coach.

UPDATE: Rooney is only expected to join Derby in January.

Rooney is still under contract with DC United, and the forward has two years left on that contract.

The Washington Post has previously confirmed that Rooney earns a base salary of $2,769,230 in the MLS.

However, that figure excludes bonuses, plus Rooney’s huge earnings from his image rights.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Derby have confirmed plans to sign Rooney to Sky Sports.]

Interestingly, the Rams intend to use Rooney as a “player first, coach second”.

Derby’s Rooney deal & FFP rules

According to reporter Daniel Storey, Derby’s deal to sign Rooney should circumvent the Financial Fair Play rules.

By signing Rooney as a player-coach, Rooney’s “significant salary can sit outside FFP calculations.”

Under the EFL’s rules, only half of Rooney’s salary will be counted with regard to FFP.

Huddersfield Town 1 – Derby County 2

After being beaten in the Championship playoff final against Aston Villa last season, Derby started their 2019-20 campaign with an excellent 2-1 win at Huddersfield.

Huddersfield are back in the Championship after being relegated from the Premier League, following two years in the top-flight.

Tom Lawrence was the match-winner for the Rams, scoring twice in three minutes in the first-half.

Karlan Ahearne-Grant scored a penalty for Huddersfield after 30 minutes, but the Terriers couldn’t find an equaliser.
