Wayne Rooney on why Alexis Sanchez was the ‘perfect’ signing for Man United

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney last night discussed his former club’s recent signing of Alexis Sanchez, labelling the gifted attacker the ‘perfect’ addition for the Red Devils.

The story surrounding the future of Chilean international Sanchez was one of the talking points of last summer’s transfer window, with all of Bayern Munich, PSG, Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City having expressed an interest in the 29-year-old.

A deadline day move to the Etihad to join up with former boss Pep Guardiola was labelled as ‘imminent’ by a number of outlets at the end of August, but, in the end, the transfer failed to materialise, mainly due to Arsenal’s inability to secure a deal for Monaco winger Thomas Lemar.

As a result, Sanchez was left with no choice but to stay put in North London, though it had still long been widely predicted that the South American would depart the Emirates, either last month for a nominal fee or for free in the summer upon the expiration of his contract.

Manchester City maintained their status as the leading contenders for his signature up until the middle of January, when Manchester United were also confirmed to have tabled an offer for Arsenal’s star man.

The emergence of the Red Devils surprisingly led City to abandon their pursuit altogether, with the Citizens having not been willing to match the financial package on the table from their fierce rivals.

Done deal

This allowed United a clear run at Sanchez, with Ed Woodward and co. having secured a deal which saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan head to the Emirates in exchange for the Chilean two weeks ago:

‘The perfect player’

Speaking during his appearance on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football last night, Manchester United all-time top scorer Wayne Rooney, now of Everton, was questioned on Sanchez’s arrival at Old Trafford, with the English international full of praise for the former Arsenal star:

‘For me, he is the perfect player for Manchester United.’

‘He’s got aggression, he’s got passion, desire. You can see he’s a winner.’

‘So I think that’s sort of what Manchester United have lacked, players around Lukaku who are going to push Lukaku on as well and try and help him, give him a bit more freedom, score more goals.’
