Watford’s Gerard Deulofeu discusses his transformation into a striker

Deulofeu’s position change

Gerard Deulofeu joined Watford on a permanent basis last summer from FC Barcelona.

Deulofeu had previously spent the second half of the 2017/18 campaign on loan with the Hornets.

Watford are believed to have paid around £11.7m for the permanent signing of the Spaniard.

Deulofeu would score 10 and assist five for Watford in the league last season.

22 of his appearances would come with the 25-year-old playing as a centre-forward.

Deulofeu has previously played much of his career on the right-wing, but Javi Gracia obviously saw something different in him.

Deulofeu has since spoken about his transition into a more central role:

“We spoke with the manager [Javi Gracia] at the beginning of the season and he said to me that I was going to play as a striker. Years before, I had been thinking that I wanted to play as a striker because you are nearer to the goal and you have more chances to score.

“Last season was really good for us, we can improve, of course and I can also improve my statistics. But I’m happy and I want to continue in that position.

“I had to adapt myself to Watford’s style because there is a lot of long balls, direct and second balls. I had to adapt myself in that team and that type of football. In the last four or five months, I enjoyed playing with Troy [Deeney] and with people who go to the challenge and after, I can take some chances.” As quoted by Sky Sports News.

Everton vs Watford

Watford didn’t get off to the best start last weekend, losing their first PL outing of 2019/20 3-0 vs Brighton.

Their next clash sees them face off against one of Deulofeu’s previous clubs, Everton.

The winger was signed by the Toffees on a permanent basis back in 2015, before eventually being sold back to Barca in 2017.

Like Watford, Everton didn’t have the best start to the new campaign. They drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace.
