Watford vs Newcastle betting tips: Premier League match preview and predictions

Watford vs Newcastle prediction: Watford 2-0 Newcastle

It’s been a very good season so far for Watford.

Despite defeat on Boxing Day, they’re still in the top half and will be confident of getting back to winning ways here.

It’s not so comfortable for Newcastle.

The Magpies suffered a battering on Wednesday and, despite some recent good results, are only 5 points above the drop zone.

It’ll be a tough task for them at Vicarage Road but who’ll come out on top?

Watford vs Newcastle United: Who will win?

Watford are odds on favourites to win at 4/5 to claim the win.

Newcastle have amassed 7 points from their last 3 away games but are 7/2 to claim another victory here.

A draw, which Rafa Benítez would be delighted with, is 13/5.

Over 2.5 goals is 10/11 but both teams to score is 5/6.

Watford to win and both teams to score no is 2/1.

Roberto Pereyra scored his sixth goal of the season on Wednesday. The Argentine international is 7/1 to score first and 9/4 to net anytime.

Salomón Rondón will be back in the Newcastle team. He’s 13/2 to break the deadlock but is also 9/4 to score anytime.

Both Troy Deeney and Gerard Deulofeu to score is 7/1.

Watford vs Newcastle United: Match preview

Javi Gracia will be delighted with his side’s first half of the season.

The Hornets won their first 4 matches and, even though they couldn’t sustain that form, they’ve been a very solid side.

They did go 6 games without a win between 3 November and 15 December before back to back wins over Cardiff and West Ham took them back up to seventh.

On Boxing Day, they were beaten 2-1 by Chelsea but 27 points from 19 games is more than satisfactory.

Will they sting back into action with a victory here?

Newcastle meanwhile are struggling.

The Toon Army saw their side battered 4-0 at Anfield on Wednesday; their 10th defeat from their opening 19 games.

However, 7 of those loses came in their first 9 before 20 October.

Their first win of the campaign came against Watford in November and they’d love to repeat that.

Prior to the Liverpool match, Benítez’s side had beaten Huddersfield and then were held to a 0-0 draw with Fulham.

They’ve got some very tough fixtures to come in January so could really do with getting something here.

Not many Premier League managers make fewer changes to their team than Javi Gracia and not many are anticipated here.

Ben Foster has played every minute in goal, keeping 4 clean sheets.

They might be forced into a change in defence though.

Christian Kabasele was forced off after colliding with the post against Chelsea so is a doubt.

With Sebastian Prödl still out, Jamaican international Adrian Mariappa could start.

Only one player has put in more crosses than left-back José Cholevas providing 5 assists; a dangerous weapon?

Étienne Capoue and Abdoulaye Doucouré are a formidable partnership in midfield.

Ken Sema has taken his opportunity having come into the team due to Will Hughes’ hip injury.

Forwards Andre Gray and Adalberto Peñaranda are also both out.

This has seen Gerard Deulofeu moved forward to partner captain Troy Deeney.

This solid, settled XI will be confident of seeing off Newcastle.

As for Newcastle, Rafa has some big decisions to make.

Martin Dúbravka has been very solid in goal; only 4 goalkeepers have kept more clean sheets than the Slovak.

Federico Fernández got the nod over Fabian Schär on Wednesday and may well keep his place.

Cieran Clark is out with an elbow injury.

Benítez has switched between a back 3 and back 4 in recent weeks but could look to match Watford’s 4-4-2.

Jonjo Shelvey and Ki Sung-yueng are out in midfield which leaves them a little bit short.

Mohamed Diamé will continue alongside Isaac Hayden.

Academy graduate Sean Longstaff made his Premier League debut off the bench at Anfield but will find himself there again.

Yoshinori Mutō started up front with Joselu on Wednesday but the latter will probably lose his place to Salomón Rondón.

Mutō is off to the Asia Cup to represent Japan after this match so they’ll look to utilise him as much they can before then.

Thus, Ayoze Pérez will be left in reserve.

Will they leave Watford with anything?
