Watford vs Arsenal prediction: Watford 2-1 Arsenal

Two sides, aiming for different types of European football, meet at Vicarage Road.

Both come into this one on a high after an impressive result last time out but who will come out on top on this pivotal Monday night?

Watford vs Arsenal: Who will win?

Watford won this fixture 2-1 last season and are 2/1 to repeat that success.

Arsenal have won just 5 Premier League away matches so far this season and are 23/20 to improve that record.

A draw, which is a better result for the hosts, is 11/4.

Over 2.5 goals is 8/15.

Both teams to score is 4/9.

Watford to win and both teams to score is 7/2.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Arsenal

Troy Deeney scored his 11th goal of the season last weekend at Wembley. He also has twi career goals against Arsenal and is 11/2 to score first and 2/1 to add to those any time.

But their semi-final was all about Gerard Deulofeu. He’s 6/1 to score first and 21/10 to score anytime.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is Arsenal’s leading scorer. He’s 7/2 to score first and 6/5 to get his 23rd of the season.

Both Deeney and Deulofeu to score, just as happened last weekend, is 16/1.

Both Aubameyang and Lacazette to score is 9/2.

Watford vs Arsenal: Match preview

What a day for Watford.

It didn’t look like it was going to be a memorable day for them though.

The Hornets were stung and with just 11 minutes to go were 2-0 down in the FA Cup semi-final against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Step forward Gerard Deulofeu.

His sensational curling goal in the 79th minute restored hope and set up a grand stand finish.

Then, in the final minute of added on time, Troy Deeney was brought down in the penalty area.

Penalty to Watford!

Troy of the Hornets smashed in the equaliser!

Extra time.

The momentum was all with Watford and Gerard Deulofeu struck again.

Wolves could not hit back and Watford are through to the FA Cup final for just the second time.

How will they look ahead of that showpiece occasion next month?

In the league, they’re now 10th but with a game in hand and just one point off seventh spot.

They beat Arsenal last year so can they do it again?

More travel sickness for Arsenal?

As for The Gunners, home really is where the heart is.

On Thursday night, they beat Napoli 2-0 in the UEFA Europa League quarter-final first leg.

That gives them a decent enough lead ahead of the second leg this Thursday at San Paolo.

Could that be their best route back into the Champions League?

Last weekend, they stumbled in the League losing 1-0 at Goodison to Everton.

That match ended a run of 6 games unbeaten in the league and it also saw them drop out of the top 4.

With away games at Wolves, Leicester and Burnley to come after this, they need to fix their away form sooner rather than later.

Will they get a much needed victory here?

One of the keys to Watford’s success has been continuity in selection.

Javi Gracia’s side is very settled and the majority of it picks itself.

There will be a change in goal though.

Heurelho Gomes, who’s expected to start the cup final, will drop out with Ben Foster coming back in.

Kiko Femenía is now the established first choice right-back.

On the other side, José Cholevas has picked up 12 booking this season, more than anybody else in the league.

In midfield, they lined up with the same personnel but in a different way last weekend.

To start with, Abdoulaye Doucouré, Étienne Capoue and Will Hughes played as a flat three behind Roberto Pereyra.

However, as they improved when they reverted to a more traditional 4-4-2, they’re expected to go back to that here.

Up front, it was a shock that Gerard Deulofeu was left out last Sunday at Wembley.

His performance as a sub ensured that he won’t be left out again in a hurry. Deulofeu is a slight doubt for this one with the ankle injury that saw the Spaniard come off in extra time.

Only Troy Deeney (15) has been directly involved in more goals than Gerard Deulofeu (13) in all competitions this season for Watford: 8 goals, 5 assists.

Speaking of the captain, in this fixture last season, he said Arsenal lacked “Cojones” so will want to score against them once again.

Can this team further derail Arsenal’s top 4 hopes?

As for Unai Emery’s side. he faces a tough balancing act.

This is the fourth of eight games Arsenal have in April and they’ll be kicking off in Southern Italy just 72 hours after this one begins.

A couple of changes are guaranteed.

Bernd Leno will come back in for Petr Čech who is first choice in the Europa League.

At the back, Sokratis Papastathopoulos picked up his tenth yellow of the season at Everton so is suspended for this one and for Palace on Sunday.

Shkodran Mustafi will come back in.

Arsenal will surely continue to play a back 3 which allows Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Sead Kolašinac to get forward.

The make up of the midfield duo and the front three is harder to predict.

Lucas Torreira, who’s now back from a domestic ban, and Aaron Ramsey were outstanding as a pair on Thursday and are likely to continue.

Granit Xhaka could be fit enough to return but he’ll probably be on the bench alongside Mattéo Guendouzi.

It’s likely to be all change in the front 3.

Emery has been reluctant to play both star strikers in away games.

As Watford have two big physical centre-forwards so Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s skill-set might be better suited than Alexandre Lacazette’s.

Mesut Özil could also miss out with the more hard working Alex Iwobi and Henrikh Mkhitaryan coming in.

This would see the formation change from 3-4-1-2 to 3-4-2-1.

Arsenal have only beaten the bottom 3, Bournemouth and Newcastle away from home this season and have only won 9 of their last 34 on the road.

Can they get a rare win away from the Emirates?

Based on the performance at Everton, it seems unlikely.
