Watford star refutes club’s claims following absence vs Arsenal

Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes has this evening taken to Twitter to deny the club’s claims that he missed the Hornets’ loss to Arsenal due to ‘personal reasons’.

The two sides went head to head at the Emirates in today’s early kick-off, with Arsenal desperate to build on their morale-boosting 2-0 victory over AC Milan on Thursday night.

Watford, meanwhile, had picked up 2 wins on the bounce in their last 2 league outings, lifting Javi Gracia’s side back into the top half of the Premier League table.

Arsenal rested both Aaron Ramsey and Laurent Koscielny for their Europa League return clash with AC Milan in London next week, meaning there were rare starts for both Mohamed Elneny and Rob Holding:

Watford, meanwhile, lined up as follows:

A relatively comfortable afternoon’s work for hosts Arsenal saw the North Londoners emerge with a 3-0 victory, courtesy of goals from Shkodran Mustafi, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The task of the Gunners could have been made markedly more difficult in the 62nd minute, though, when Watford were awarded a penalty, just 3 minutes after Aubameyang had doubled the home side’s lead.

However, the subsequent spot-kick was missed by Troy Deeney, who’s disappointing effort down the middle was parried by Petr Cech.

Ahead of kick-off this afternoon, questions were raised regarding the omission of Heurelho Gomes from Waford’s squad, as, despite the Brazilian having lost his starting place of late to Udinese loanee Orestis Karnezis, Gomes is still viewed as the Hornets’ second-choice by the club’s fans.

However, a statement on behalf of the official Watford Twitter account a short time following the release of the club’s matchday squad to face Arsenal seemed to have cleared up the confusion:

But, in a surprise update this evening, Gomes himself has moved to refute Watford’s claims, seemingly suggesting that he has simply been dropped by manager Javi Gracia:
