Watford confirm managerial appointment / explain Silva sacking

Premier League outfit Watford have this evening confirmed the appointment of the club’s new manager, following the sacking of Marco Silva earlier today.

Parting ways

After a dismal spell of spell form which had seen the Hornets pick up just 1 win from their last 11 league outings and slip to within 4 points of the Premier League relegation zone, an official statement across Watford’s social media channels this morning confirmed that the club had decided to part ways with Silva after just 8 months in charge:

Blame game

A follow-up statement on the club’s official website cited ‘an unwarranted approach by a Premier League rival’ (known to be Everton) as the reason for Silva’s sacking:

‘This has been a difficult decision and one not taken lightly. The Club is convinced the appointment of Silva was the right one and had it not been for the unwarranted approach by a Premier League rival for his services we would have continued to prosper under his leadership.’
‘The catalyst for this decision is that unwarranted approach, something which the Board believes has seen a significant deterioration in both focus and results to the point where the long-term future of Watford FC has been jeopardised.’
‘For the security and success of the football club, the Board believes it has to make a change.’

And, as revealed this evening, Watford have since capped off a hectic day for the club with confirmation of Silva’s replacement at the club, in the form of experienced former Malaga and Rubin Kazan boss Javi Gracia:
