Watch Jurgen Klopp’s WhatsApp video message to Adebayo Akinfenwa after Wycombe’s Championship promotion

Oxford United 1 – Wycombe Wanderers 2

Wycombe Wanderers are in the Championship.

On Monday night at a virtually empty Wembley Stadium, Wycombe beat Oxford United 2-1 in the League One playoff final.

Wanderers only booked their spot in the playoffs after the League One season was curtailed, and a weighted points system lifted them into the top-6.

At Wembley, Joe Jacobson was the hero for Wycombe as he scored a match-winning penalty in the 79th minute.

Anthony Stewart opened for Wycombe after 9 minutes, while Mark Sykes levelled for Oxford just before the hour.

Adebayo Akinfenwa’s wonderful post-match interview

Now 38, Adebayo Akinfenwa is looking forward to competing in the Championship in 2020-21.

Akinfenwa, also known as ‘The Beast’, is perhaps the most well-known player in Wycombe’s squad.

After the Oxford match, Akinfenwa gave a brilliant interview to Sky Sports, celebrating his club’s achievements in winning promotion.

As a well-known Liverpool fan, Akinfenwa also gave a shout-out to Reds manager Jurgen Klopp. He said:

First and foremost, I want to thank God, because today he made the impossible possible. Four years ago I stood in front of you and I was technically unemployed.

Let me tell you something, the only person that can hit me up on WhatsApp this time is Klopp, so we can celebrate together. You get me? Oi!

I hope my story shows that the only opinion that matters is the opinion you have about yourself. I was lucky and blessed to find a manager and players who believed in me, so we are here today, and I’ll say it for the people in the back: Wycombe’s in the Championship.

It didn’t take long for Akinfenwa’s message to reach Jurgen Klopp.

Following the League One playoff final, Akinfenwa uploaded a video on social media revealing how Klopp contacted him to celebrate Wycombe’s remarkable achievement. Klopp said:

Hello big man, congratulations!

Watched the game, well I didn’t see the post-match interviews but Hendo [Jordan Henderson] or one of my players told me that you want to get, what did you think to say? If you could get in contact with me on WhatsApp, here we go!
