Gareth Bale: Wales' all-time top goal scorer

Wales vs Azerbaijan betting tips: Euro 2020 Qualifier match preview and predictions

Wales vs Azerbaijan prediction: Wales 3-0 Azerbaijan

After a miserable June, Wales need wins to get back on track in European Championship qualifying.

In October and November, they face crucial double headers.

But first, they must win this home match to get themselves back in the mix.

Will Wales win at the Cardiff City Stadium?

Wales vs Azerbaijan: Who will win?

Wales are massive odds on favourites at 1/4 to win this one.

Azerbaijan have won only two competitive away games since 2011 and are 10/1 to claim victory here.

A draw, which would be a disaster for Wales, is 19/5.

Over 2.5 goals is 10/11.

Both teams to score no is 2/5.

Wales to win and both teams to score no is 4/6.

Gareth Bale is Wales top scorer of all time, he now has 31 international goals. He is 2/1 to score first and 8/13 to add to his tally.

Dan James scored in Wales’ only other home qualifier this year. He is 5/1 to break the deadlock and 15/8 to get his second Wales goal.

Rufat Dadaşov is the second highest scorer in the Azerbaijani squad with four. The Preußen Münster man is 12/1 to score first and 5/1 to net anytime.

Both James and Bale to score is 4/1.

Both Harry Wilson and Bale to score is also 4/1.

Both Joe Allen and Tom Lawrence to score is 20/1.

Both Aghabala Ramazanov and Ramil Şeydayev to score is 60/1.

It’s fair to say it has been a very mixed campaign for Wales so far.

Back in March, Dan James’ fifth-minute goal saw them to a narrow 1-0 home victory over Slovakia.

Then, in June, they faced back to back away games, in Croatia and then in Hungary.

In the first of those in Osijek, James Lawrence’s own goal saw them to a 2-1 defeat to Croatia.

Then, three days later in Budapest, a late goal saw Wales lose 1-0 to a resurgent Hungary.

A disastrous double header for Ryan Giggs’ team.

This is their only qualifier of this month but, later this year, they face two huge double headers.

In October, they travel to Slovakia before hosting Croatia.

They then finish the campaign a month later with a trip to Baku and a home match with Hungary.

Those games will be pivotal but the Dragons need to close the gap on those above them with a victory here.

This match is simply must win.

Can Azerbaijan get off the mark?

This is such a crucial game for Wales because Azerbaijan have so far been the group’s whipping boys.

On matchday one, they actually took a shock lead in Croatia through Ramil Şeydayev before eventually losing 2-1.

They then had back to back home games in June but were far less competitive in those.

They lost 3-1 at home to Hungary before going down 5-1 to Slovakia three days later.

Their poor form should come as no surprise.

The Baku Olympic Stadium will host four matches at Euro 2020 and the UEFA Nations League was seen as Azerbaijan’s big chance to be there.

However, they won only two of their six games so finished second in League D3, five points behind group winners Kosovo.

That meant they finished seventh in the League D overall rankings and, with only the top four guaranteed a play-off place, they are virtually guaranteed not to get one.

Some of Euro 2020 will take place in Azerbaijan but their national team looks set not to be there.

Can they get a result in Cardiff and massively damage Wales’ chances of getting to the Euros?

Wales team news vs Azerbaijan

Ryan Giggs’ squad is not at full strength but he should be able to put out a side more than capable of beating Azerbaijan.

Despite the fact he has only made one appearance for Crystal Palace this season, Wayne Hennessey will be in goal.

This will be his 85th cap and he has actually only missed one of the last 36 competitive international matches.

In defence, Ashley Williams has been left out of the squad as he has not played at all this season.

That means that it’s likely to be James Lawrence and Chris Mepham at the back, just as it was against Slovakia and Croatia.

Ben Davies is expected to get the nod over Neil Taylor at left-back.

In midfield, Ethan Ampadu is yet to make his debut for RB Leipzig but is expected to start here.

Aaron Ramsey likewise is yet to feature for Juventus this season and he has had to pull out of the squad with a groin problem.

They’ll be desperate to have him back for the last four qualifiers.

Further forward will be a frightening attacking quartet.

Harry Wilson has already scored twice for Bournemouth this season.

Likewise, Tom Lawrence has netted two goals this campaign for Derby County.

But Dan James is the in form man having scored three times in four appearances for Manchester United.

Those three will all be supporting the talisman of this nation, Gareth Bale.

Since being reintegrated into the Real Madrid team, he’s started all three La Liga matches providing an assist in Vigo and bagging a brace at Villarreal last Sunday.

They will hope his fine form continues here.

This is a very young, attacking side and it should simply be too hot to handle for Azerbaijan.

As for Nikola Jurčević’s side, they certainly do not have the talent that their hosts can boast.

Salahat Aghayev will win his 19th cap in goal; he’s recently taken over as number on from 33 year old Kamran Ağayev who won 79 caps.

Aghayev is one of 17 members of this squad who play in the Azerbaijani Premier League.

The rest play in Portugal, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Russia or the German lower leagues.

Their captain is Maksim Medvedev of Qarabağ who will play right-back.

They’re without first choice centre-back Badavi Hüseynov so Pavel Paşayev will come in and partner Anton Krivotsyuk.

Gara Garayev will anchor the midfield.

Brazilian born Richard Almeida will win his 19th cap alongside him; he became an Azerbaijani international after gaining citizenship in 2017.

Rüfat Dadaşov is expected to get the nod over Ramil Şeydayev and Mahir Emreli to lead the line.

Can this minnow cause a huge upset in Cardiff?
