Virgil van Dijk’s Southampton comeback was a disaster: Did Liverpool get lucky?

Virgil van Dijk makes his Southampton comeback

After a summer of constant transfer speculation, as he recovered from a serious injury, on Monday night Virgil van Dijk made a significant comeback.

The Dutch defender last played a professional football match for Southampton in the Premier League in late January.

Since then, Virgil van Dijk has been suffering from ankle and foot problems that have seen him miss eight months of football.

Liverpool fail to sign Virgil van Dijk

During that period, Virgil van Dijk was heavily linked with Liverpool who he reportedly wants to join.

According to a number of sources, Virgil van Dijk met with Jurgen Klopp in Blackpool and agreed to move to Liverpool at the beginning of the summer.

Liverpool were forced to admit they had tapped up VVD at the beginning of the summer and released an extraordinary statement.

Virgil van Dijk remains at Southampton despite links with Chelsea and Manchester City besides Liverpool.

Virgil van Dijk’s disastrous playing return

On Monday night, Virgil van Dijk played for the Southampton Under-23 side against Aston Villa.

Van Dijk played the full 90 minutes but failed to cover himself in much glory as Villa ran riot.

After the game, Southampton Under-23 boss Radhi Jaïdi did not hold back on the defensive performance.

“They were sloppy goals”

Jaïdi: “The way that we conceded the goals was disappointing. They were sloppy goals and we showed a lack of awareness and understanding at times. So we need to work on that and adjust for the next game.”

Did Liverpool get lucky?

It is noticeable that Virgil van Dijk’s last Instagram update was in July. The Dutch defender makes no reference to his playing return on Monday.

It seems likely that van Dijk is still angered by the fact that he was not sold to Liverpool.

Yet, van Dijk is clearly still finding his way back into form.

Of course, Liverpool’s performance at Manchester City where they lost 5-0 suggests VVD would have been an improvement on Ragnar Klavan…
