Virgil van Dijk analysis: How beating Bayern Munich impacts title race vs Man City

Bayern Munich 1 – Liverpool 3

Liverpool are through to the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

Having lost all their previous away matches in the competition this season, Liverpool ended that poor away run winning 3-1 at Bayern Munich.

Liverpool’s victory means all four Premier League clubs are in the final eight.

Sadio Mane scored twice for the Reds in Germany.

Virgil van Dijk also scored for Liverpool in the second half.

A Joel Matip own goal put Bayern on the board before the break.

Title race vs Man City

Prior to the Bayern game, many were talking about whether Liverpool can seriously compete on two fronts.

Indeed, the likes of Gary Neville made the case that it would be positive for Liverpool to lose to Bayern in order to battle Man City in the Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp dismissed those suggestions before the Bayern match.

While after Wednesday’s victory, van Dijk was asked for his assessment of how the Bayern win could impact the fight with Man City. He said:

We should be full of confidence. We’re in the last eight of the Champions League. We’re in the title race. And it’s all looking pretty positive. Let’s just focus on that.

What about Bayern Munich

As for Bayern Munich, their coach Nico Kovac blames mistakes for the Liverpool defeat.

Robert Lewandowski argued that Bayern were too defensive in the two matches against Liverpool.

Should that be construed as a dig from the Polish striker against their Croatian coach?
