Video: West Ham’s Fabianski leaves pitch in flood of tears to standing ovation on final Poland appearance

Footage which will no doubt bring a tear to the eye of many a Polish fan has come to the fore online on Saturday evening.

San Marino drubbing

Paulo Sousa’s men returned to action a short time ago.

After securing a potentially crucial point in a meeting with England during the last international break, Poland got their World Cup qualifying campaign back underway, in a meeting with minnows San Marino.

The Eagles headed into proceedings aware that nothing but a victory would suffice, in their efforts to keep pace with 2nd-placed Albania in the Group I table.

And, when all was said and done, secure a key three points is precisely what Poland managed.

A predictably dominant display ultimately culminated in the hosts emerging on the right side of a 5-0 scoreline in Warsaw.

Karol Swiderski, Tomasz Kedziora, Adam Buksa and Krzysztof Piatek all managed to find the net, though there was bizarrely no room for prolific Bayern Munich hitman Robert Lewandowski on the scoresheet.

Poland, in turn, remain 3rd in Group I, a point adrift of 2nd-placed Albania.

Fabianski says goodbye

As outlined above, though, on an otherwise fine night all-round for the Poles, there was one altogether tear-jerking moment forthcoming during the 2nd-half of action.

This came just shy of the hour mark, when Lukasz Fabianski was hauled off by boss Sousa.

The move came as a form of tribute to Fabianski, in the knowledge that this evening’s clash would mark his 57th and final appearance for his country.

And the shot-stopper couldn’t help but allow his emotions show…

Amid a standing ovation on the part of both those in attendance, and his Polish teammates, Fabianski made his way from the pitch in a flood of tears, bringing to a close a wonderful international career in the process:
