Benzema returns for France
France head coach Didier Deschamps was a reserved character when asked about his conversations with Karim Benzema.
The Real Madrid man returned the the squad for the first time since 2014 after a controversy saw him exiled.
“I’m not going to give you or anyone else any more details about that,” Deschamps said.
“You know the story of our meeting, the most important step: we met and talked. Without that, it would have been impossible.”
He was however picked to start for France at the first opportunity showing clearly any ill feeling was solidly in the past.
Benzema’s dire penalty statistic
Despite the jubilance at his return, he marked it in a less than perfect way, missing a penalty in the friendly with Wales.

However, what was revealed after the penalty had been missed was that Benzema had continued a bad run for France of which Didier Deschamps may think twice about allowing the Real Madrid forward to take the spot kicks.
Karim Benzema has now missed three penalties in his career:
❌ vs. Sweden (2014)
❌ vs. Switzerland (2014)
❌ vs. Wales (2021)

Typically Antoine Griezmann had been on penalty duties but he too has had a poor record from the spot of late.
Penalties becoming a real issue for France. Griezmann has missed his last few. Benzema has missed his last three for France (obvs over a somewhat extended period) – apparently the only three he’s ever missed. Didn’t Mbappe miss one recently too?
Can we bring Giroud on for pens?

France will need to get some serious practice in before the tournament.
