Video & stats: Arsenal’s Guendouzi reminds doubters of talents in MOTM display for Marseille/Saliba joins celebrations

A member of Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal loan army – in the form of midfielder Matteo Guendouzi – stole the headlines in France this weekend, owing to a remarkable Man of the Match display.

Marvelous Matteo

Guendouzi marked his post-international break return to action with Marseille on Sunday night.

The 22-year-old, after a fine start to the campaign back in his home country, was handed his latest start in the middle of the park in a Ligue 1 meeting with Lorient.

And to say that Guendouzi subsequently went on to impress would be something of an understatement.

En route to an eventual 4-1 victory over his former club, the midfield talent lit up the Stade Velodrome, in one of the performances of the French top-flight season thus far.

Guendouzi played a direct hand in no fewer than three of OM’s goals, teeing up Boubacar Kamara for the game’s opener, before bagging a brace over the course of the 2nd-half.

His first of the night proved particularly impressive, as the Arsenal loanee broke free at the front post to nod a wonderful looping header in at the back stick:

Quick to join the celebrations, meanwhile, was another Gunners talent, in the form of William Saliba.

Central defender Saliba too enjoyed an outstanding performance up against Lorient, labelled by viewers of the clash as ‘full of authority and class’:

Arteta are you watching?

Perhaps most notweworthy of all when it comes to Sunday night’s action in the south of France, though, was the head-turning stat-line conjured up by Man of the Match Guendouzi.

As outlined below, the 22-year-old showcased the repertoire of a complete box-to-box midfielder up against Lorient.

Not only did he chip in with a pair of goals and an assist, but Guendouzi also enjoyed a flawless evening when it came to both dribbling and long balls, as well as contributing on the defensive front courtesy of a hefty 13 ball recoveries:
