Video: Explosive Aubameyang guides Gabon to AFCON with goal & assist, as Arsenal’s upcoming absentees mount

Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang proved the star of the show, as Gabon booked their spot at the 2022 African Cup of Nations.

Gabon 3-0 DR Congo

Auba & co. welcomed the Democratic Republic of Congo to the Stade de Franceville on Thursday night.

The clash marked a key one when it came to the respective sides’ hopes of clinching AFCON qualification, with just a solitary point having separated the African outfits ahead of kick-off.

When all was said and done in Franceville, though, Gabon made clear their evident superiority, en route to a dominant 3-0 win.

As outlined above, the country’s star man unsurprisingly proved the evening’s standout performer, as captain Aubameyang ensured that the peculiarly-nicknamed ‘Brazilians’ booked their spot at next year’s showpiece.

Aaron Boupendza opened the game’s scoring in sensational fashion on the stroke of the interval, before Denis Bouanga was slipped through courtesy of a perfectly weighted Aubameyang pass to make it two 20 minutes from time.

And there was even time for Arsenal’s skipper to get in on the act himself, lashing home a fine left-footed strike shortly before full-time, to round out a superb all-round display:

Arsenal concerns

Whilst Gabon booking their spot at the African Cup of Nations will of course come as a thrill for Aubameyang himself, those back in north London, on the other hand, will likely view the situation in an altogether less positive light.

This comes with the tournament set to get underway next January, smack bang in the middle of the Premier League season.

Joining the Gunners captain at the AFCON will be teammates Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny, with Nicolas Pepe’s Ivory Coast also widely expected to seal qualification over the coming week.

Mikel Arteta and co., in turn, may be well served in seeking out added reinforcements both in midfield and attack this summer, to cover for the impending absences of some of the club’s star men.
