Video: Emotional scenes at Brentford as Christian Eriksen marks return to the pitch

A heartwarming scene played out during the Premier League meeting between Brentford and Newcastle United this afternoon, as Christian Eriksen marked his long-awaited return to the pitch.

Danish international Eriksen was of course afforded a 2nd chance at the top level of football last month, when Thomas Frank's Brentford opted to bring the midfield conductor in as a free agent.

This comes after Eriksen, owing to Serie A’s rules surrounding players being fitted with cardioverter-defibrillators, was released by Inter Milan on the back of his frightening cardiac arrest at last summer's European Championships.

The 29-year-old had since spent time building up match fitness in friendly outings with Brentford over the course of the last week, impressing to the tune of a trio of assists across two outings.

In turn, he was afforded a spot on the Bees' bench for their Premier League meeting with Newcastle United this afternoon.

And, as alluded to above, a short time ago, the moment fans across the globe had been waiting for was finally forthcoming.

This came as Eriksen, early in the 2nd-half of action at the Brentford Community Stadium, was introduced to the fray in place of Mathias Jensen, sparking a deserved standing ovation on the part of fans, staff and players alike:

Many others, meanwhile, have since taken to social media, to reveal their delight for the former Tottenham standout:

Eriksen's return aside, though, it has proven an otherwise miserable afternoon for Brentford on Saturday thus far.

Thomas Frank's men, amid an alarming dip in form of late, currently trail fellow relegation candidates Newcastle by two goals to nil, owing to strikes on the part of Joelinton and Joe Willock.

Should the scoreline remain the same through the final whistle in west London, the day's hosts, in turn, will slip below Newcastle in the Premier League table, just three points clear of the drop zone.
