Video: Barkley’s tantrum after being subbed vs Arsenal spotted by Dean Smith
Smith happy with Arsenal win
A 1-0 victory over Arsenal was the perfect response after a midweek defeat to West Ham for Aston Villa. Dean Smith spoke about how happy he was with his side’s performance, and how they had responded to the disappointment of a loss last time out:
“As disappointed as I was on Wednesday is as happy as I am today – it’s polar opposites. On Wednesday, we felt like a good team without putting in the hard yards. I reminded them today of what it takes to be a good team and why we’d got ten wins before today,” he said.
“We have the quality to score goals in abundance and we showed that today. I was most pleased with the desire to see the game out at 1-0. I’m really pleased for all of them.”
Ollie Watkins grabbed the only goal on Saturday, and Smith was full of praise for his striker. Emi Martinez, who Villa signed from Arsenal, was also backed by the former Brentford coach.

“He [Watkins] doesn’t give centre halves a moment’s peace. Anyone who has played against him this season will tell you that. I thought we deserved the win. They had the lion’s share of possession and put some good balls into the box, and I felt we got good blocks and tackles in when we needed to.”
“Emi’s made the save from the free-kick and with his feet in the second half, but their ‘keeper was the overworked ‘keeper in terms of the chances. I thought we created the big chances today.”
Barkley tantrum
Despite all of the positivity stemming from Villa’s latest victory, during the match, Ross Barkley was spotted looking altogether unhappy after being substituted by Dean Smith in the second-half.
The England international was taken off the pitch and, in his frustration, kicked a bottle of water which startled his manager. Smith, in turn, spotted his attacking midfielder having a small tantrum:
“That is not going to help him!”

Smith did not look too pleased with the actions of Barkley, and it will be interesting to see whether or not the Chelsea loanee will be playing from the start in Villa’s next fixture.
