Tottenham after Juventus
Spurs are back in action on Sunday when they take on Bournemouth in the Premier League at the Vitality Stadium.
It’s the first match Tottenham will compete in after their 2017-18 Champions League dream ended last week.
Juventus knocked Spurs out he UCL after a 2-1 win at Wembley.
Jan Vertonghen vs Giorgio Chiellini
After the Juve match, Giorgio Chiellini made comments about Tottenham which brought the club’s mentality into question.
Chiellini doubted Tottenham’s mental toughness after Juve progressed into the quarterfinals:
Tottenham proved to be a great team. I think they are missing very little in becoming one of the best teams in Europe.
It’s the history of Tottenham. They always create many chances and score so much, but in the end they miss [lack] something. We believe in the history.
So is there something fundamentally wrong with Tottenham’s mental state?
When that issue was put to Jan Vertonghen in the Sunday Times, the Belgian defender hit back:
We’ve got the right mentality and I know we have what it takes to get there. Hopefully we will get another chance to show that to the world.
This team can reach a lot and it’s always nicer to have achieved this with a group of players who have been together for a lot of time and came through the ranks or have lived in London for a long time.
It took me maybe five years to get my first trophy with Ajax, but it feels like you have to win a trophy to win more, and then they follow. It’s just the belief you can win it so hopefully we can win the FA Cup this year and the rest will follow. We’ve got two things to focus on, the top four and the FA Cup. They’re the main two goals this season.
Bournemouth vs Tottenham
Spurs will be looking for a win at Bournemouth on Sunday to boost their top four hopes.
A win for Tottenham would take them into third spot, one point above Liverpool, who lost to Man United on Saturday.
Chelsea moved to within two points of the Lillywhites with a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace.
