Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Virgil van Dijk is still in pain having come off injured against Southampton on Saturday.
The Dutch international suffered a rib injury during the Reds’ 3-0 win at Anfield.
Liverpool take on Chelsea in a Carabao Cup and Premier League doubleheader this week.
Jurgen Klopp on Virgil van Dijk: “It’s painful. Nothing else.”
Jurgen Klopp has suggested that Virgil van Dijk will miss Liverpool’s third-round Carabao Cup tie against Chelsea.
The 27-year-old is still suffering from a rib injury and needs to be assessed.
It is unlikley that the German manager will risk his best defender in the League Cup.
“He is much better. It’s painful. Nothing else.
“Painful is already not too cool, so we will see how we deal with that.
“But it’s already better. How we thought after the game, it’s not too serious but it’s not nothing.
“So that needs to settle, for sure.
“I didn’t speak to him today so we will see how he comes here today and then we’ll make a decision about him.”
Jurgen Klopp on Dejan Lovren
Klopp has also revealed that Dejan Lovren is ready to return from a stomach injury against Chelsea.
The defender has not played since the World Cup final with the injury.
“Dejan looks quite good, trained completely normal four times I think.
“Had a very intense period before that with fitness guys. He looks ready.”
